    EXCERPT

For two weeks everyone asked me if I was excited. Most of the time I would smile and nod my head in agreement. But something in me knew this trip was going to be much more than a vacation. My father was sure to give the historical run down of west Africa’s challenges and participation in the slave trade. My mother speculated about potential business opportunities that could lay in wait. Friends told me they’d be looking forward to hearing all about my experience in “the motherland.” My family, as always, was excited and optimistic about this new adventure.

For the American male, the journey back to Africa has always been a transformational experience. I knew it would bring me to a significant moment in my personal growth, but I was completely unprepared for just how significant this trip would be.

    Strength is understanding, love...
